Accountability

The decisions we make, and the actions taken as a result, determine
outcomes and results.  Good decisions or not, we need to take
responsibility for our actions.  This is particularly true of those people
who are elected to represent us, as well as those in positions of
responsibility who carry out the wishes of our governing bodies.

Some of our current elected officials don’t seem to subscribe to this
way of life.  We can point to at least three instances, concerning our
requests to documents and decisions and actions taken by the mayor
and some council members, where information was not forthcoming,
short on substance, or a downright refusal to supply requested details
of city business, in what we perceive to be outright and flagrant
avoidance of direct requests.

It has been said that democracy requires that citizens be informed.
Our attempts to keep informed have met with resistance in what
appears to be a way of keeping Burnsville residents in the dark.  That
smacks of cover up.  It also contributes to a feeling that those people
responsible for those decisions do not want to be accountable for
what they have done.

Whatever the reasons for this lack of concern for the voting citizens
of Burnsville, there is an eventual accountability, which is the result at
the polls at election time.  Keep in mind the positive contributions of
our elected officials, so your support for them can be meaningful at
election time.  Also remember the decisions and actions of those
elected officials who ignore the wishes and concerns of the majority
of citizens, but instead favor their own political agenda, so in future
elections we can work toward electing officials who are responsive to
the needs and wants of Burnsville citizens.
